The Day the Repositories Left the Machine
Written later and filed to this date, as part of filling in every day of the year.
565 commits landed across thirty-two repositories on one Sunday in June, more than on any other day this workspace has recorded. Most of them were small. Twenty-two repositories received the identical subject line, “docs: cut to v1.0, drop historical/migration cruft”, in an eleven-minute window that evening, each one stripping done-lists and migration notes out of a repository’s docs. The number is not the story. What it changed is the rule about pushing.
Since late May the rule had been: commit locally, never push. The decision record argued that local git is valuable on its own, history and diffs and the draft-change model, and that a remote could wait until something needed one. At 3:25 that Sunday afternoon a new record superseded it. An untracked repository could now get a private remote and one seed push, after a secret scan passed, and would then “return to local-only commits (no further auto-pushes)”.
At 3:40, twenty-five private repositories were created on GitHub in eighty-six seconds. The site’s own repository followed eight minutes later.
By 9:18 that night the charter had been rewritten over it. There was no local-only state any more: every project is a private, remote-backed repository, and after a commit you push. The clause allowing one push and no more had lasted six hours. The one exception survived both rewrites and is still the only one: the public site, where a push is a publication, stays a deliberate human act.
Three versions of one rule in a day sounds like indecision and was the opposite. The first version protected against an outward-facing surprise. The second noticed that a private remote is a backup, not a surface. The third noticed that a backup you have to remember to take is not one. Each rewrite was the previous rule meeting the day’s commits, none of which, at breakfast, could have gone anywhere.
The superseded record is still in the file, marked superseded, by a decision made the same afternoon.
