The Second Agent Also Found Nothing

Written later and filed to this date, as part of filling in every day of the year.

At thirteen minutes past two on a Monday morning, an agent working the news aggregator shipped no code and wrote down why. The surface it was there to extend, the one that shows where news outlets contradict each other, was mature: every signal the backend could derive was already on every reader, the feed, the glasses, the leaderboard, the detail page. The three things left were not its to decide. More overlapping source feeds, the real lever, is an editorial choice. The local model was down and the database held 345 articles, zero clusters and zero claims, so nothing new would surface regardless of code. The one novel capability, detecting consensus rather than dispute, needed a change to the extraction prompt that could not be validated with the model down. It filed all three as questions for me and exited.

At twenty-seven past three a second agent arrived with no memory of the first. It read the entry and did not trust it. It re-derived the conclusion from scratch: audited the frontend against the backend to confirm no computed field was going unrendered, rechecked the model and the database counts, read the prompt. Then it concurred, and added one line for whoever came next: two independent sessions now agree, so re-confirm in minutes instead of re-sweeping the whole surface.

The same morning the site’s own repository recorded its sixth consecutive session with nothing worth building, and listed the candidates it had weighed and rejected so the seventh would not have to weigh them again. The day before, the keeper that staffs the fleet had learned to stop assigning a repository after three no-op sessions in a row.

The word for this is a park. A park is a stop with a reason and an address: what is finished, what remains, and whose decision each remaining item waits on, written where the next agent reads first. It is not the first kind of stuck, where the world said wait, and not the second, where the agent is about to do something it may not do alone. It is the third kind: nothing left that is worth doing without you. A parked agent’s work is done when the next one can check its reasoning faster than it could redo its sweep.
